Our commitment to Responsible Sustainable Palm Oil

Palm Oil and our use & responsibility.

Palm Oil use is quite a hot topic today (as it should be).
In our quest for absolute transparency, we want you to know that we (Skinchanted) do use palm oil in some of our products.
BUT WAIT...
Before you run away screaming to the hills or burning us at the stake, please take a minute to consider the following information:

Skinchanted is completely committed to Responsible and Sustainable Palm Oil production & use.
100% of the palm oil used in Skinchanted products has always been and always will be palm oil that is grown and harvested in a safe, responsible, renewable manner as certified by the RSPO - Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil - www.rspo.org
We care about our planet and all of its creatures great and small, and by purchasing our products you are doing the same. Never, ever, underestimate Minion Leader's love for Orangutans and all things wild & free (including people)!

About Palm Oil: What is palm oil? Why is it used in our products?

Palm oil is a key ingredient in many of our products, and rightfully so. Palm oil contains saturated and unsaturated fats, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. Palm oil contains the hard to find toctrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family. The common form of vitamin E, tocopherol, has long been used to treat many skin ailments and is found in many anti-aging products. Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant that helps the skin to fight free radicals that damage the skin.

Dr. Betty Kamen, PhD confirms that as a stronger antioxidant than tocopherols, toctrienols have proven to be more effective in preventing damage from free radicals. Used topically, as with tocopherol, toctrienols are able to penetrate deep into the skin's layers to enable healing and protection from the base up.

Palm oil is found in shampoos, conditioners, soaps, lotions, creams, foundations and more. It is found in shampoos and soaps for its ability to remove oil and dirt from hair and skin. It also contains a refatting agent that helps restore the hair and skin natural oils most soaps and shampoos strip away letting moisture escape. In shampoos and conditioners, it also provides a conditioning agent. It is added to skin care products not only for its anti-aging properties, but also because it provides deep moisturizing properties making the skin soft and supple.

Consumer concerns: Here at Skinchanted, we too are consumers not only in business but in our home life. We do share the same concerns that you (every consumer) have.

Below are some of the world's & our concerns about palm oil and its production and use:

Irresponsible growth and harvesting of Palm oil leads to the following:
Rainforest Destruction
Indonesia’s tropical rainforests are among the world’s most diverse. They provide critical habitat to species including highly endangered Sumatran tigers, Sumatran elephants and orangutans.

Threat to indigenous people
Tens of millions of Indonesians rely directly on rainforests for their livelihoods.

Global climate change
Rainforests are the earth’s largest sinks of carbon, safely storing the greenhouse gases that cause climate change. In Indonesia, rainforests are razed releasing massive quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In fact, deforestation causes eighty percent of Indonesia’s CO2 emissions, making the tropical nation the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

Why not just stop using palm oil and why is using Certified Sustainable Palm Oil a more effective and responsible choice?

There are several reasons:

  • Oil palms are the most productive type of all the edible oil plants. Oil palms produce about 5-10 times more oil per acre than other crops like soy or canola. In this way, palm oil can be a more environmentally friendly oil because less land has to be cleared to get the same amount of product.
  • Indonesia and Malaysia are countries that struggle with poverty and palm oil is a huge part of the economy.  Without it, millions more people would be unemployed.
  • There will always be a demand for edible oil, and this demand is growing due to worldwide population growth.  Palm oil is in many of the things we eat and use every day. If we boycott palm oil, another crop will just take its place.
  • Certified Sustainable Palm oil isn't just any palm oil. It comes from a plantation that has made a commitment to produce palm oil in a way that minimizes its impact on wildlife, indigenous people, and the planet.
  • It does not seem effective or realistic to boycott palm oil. It does not seem possible to memorize every name on this list below in order to read labels and avoid purchasing all products containing these ingredients/derivatives. We recommend supporting RSPO member companies and sustainable palm oil production instead!
